2008 Technology Winners and Losers
Instead, I refer you to IEEE Spectrum magazine's list of "winning" and "losing" technologies.
For chip geeks, a particularly good one is The Ultimate Dielectric Is...Nothing, highlighting IBM's research to create a vaccuum between chip interconnect. Not only is the technology very cool, but I'm really impressed by the writing in this article. The author is able to explain things like photolithography and crosstalk in layman's terms. Take a look; it's a nice piece of work.
I am so impressed by the cutting edge semiconductor R&D done at IBM and Intel. They are constantly pushing the envelope and competing very ably with giant foundries like TSMC. It's surprising that these tech heavyweights don't do more COT (foundry) business. I wonder if it's a lack of ability to set up the business and customer service, or a lack of desire, i.e., that they have more profitable things to do with their fabs.

Semiconductor Co. Gets R-E-S-P-E-C-T
The article itself is good. It does a nice job of explaining GPUs and CPUs in laymen's terms. There were only a couple spots where I thought "what on earth are they talking about?" And, their highlights of the company's history and CEO are well done.

Happy Birthday Mr. Transistor
Along the same lines, Fairchild, the first big semiconductor company and training ground for countless startup founders, recently celebrated its 50th birthday.
I've often thought that if you really, really grokked the transistor, you'd be all set to contribute to large swaths of electrical engineering. I'm certainly not as facile with all its behaviors as I'd like. How long would it take to really understand, thoroughly and intuitively? A year? Four years? A career?

I had the pleasure of attending the awards banquet, since my company purchased a table.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon was California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's the first time I've seen and heard "Ahnold" live, and he is quite impressive. He is very charismatic and his answers to audience questions made a great deal of sense. Of course, sound bites are easy and the devil is in the details when enacting policies and making hard choices. Voters are not easy to please. (We'll have our cake and eat it too, please.)
But enough of the Governator. For Aart, there was a fine tribute video shown with testimonials from business and community leaders. Aart was gracious and humble in his acceptance, noting all the contributions from his family, the Synopsys Foundation, and his colleagues in the Leadership Group.
Aart has been a true leader in the local community and Synopsys has been especially strong supporting Education and Science Fairs. Congratulations on a well deserved honor!

Penryn Arrives: Intel at 45 nm
The secret sauce in their 45 nm recipe is "HK+MG", for High-K dielectric and Metal Gate. Cool stuff, this High-K addresses the huge problem of gate leakage as the process scales down. The power reduction claims are very impressive.
One nit that's always bothered me is that we all design in CMOS, and the "M" in CMOS stands for Metal. But the gate hasn't been metal in ages! Now it is metal again and it's a novelty. What is old is now new again.
Also, take a look at the die shot.
That's two duplicate cores and a huge cache.
Hey come on Intel, design some real gates, like the
Graphics companies do! :-)

Maybe Sun is onto something
Jonathan Schwartz could have been paraphrasing me when mentioning those unimpressed by Sun's latest CPU announcements.
Those who love desktop computers thought we were daft. Here we had what looked like a slow chip, optimized for something no home user really cared about (lowering power bills, running multiple OS's and minimizing space). And to make matters worse, we removed support for floating point precision math on the chip - to save more power and space. Desktop users (who play games that often feast on floating point processes) thought we were loons, but most datacenters didn't notice (very few datacenters use floating point).
But his blog posting Jonathan Schwartz's Weblog: Hugging Customers (Not Trees) shows that there's a method in Sun's madness. Might Sun be able to compete with Intel after all? Let's hope so, as competition is good for the industry, and AMD has been struggling against Intel recently.

I couldn't find his blog. The link is to an audio interview puff piece. I've always wanted someone to write the whole story of Avant!'s theft of source code from Cadence: how they did it, and most incredibly, what were they thinking? It would be a business thriller, no doubt.
It's sad that one conspirator (an EE PhD) ended up going to prison at San Quentin while the CEO walked free and is doing business in Asia.

AMD Salvages Phenom
But upon a little more reflection, I have to agree with Larry Dignan of ZDNet that AMD’s triple core chip is a nice intersection where engineering meets business savvy.
Of course! It's not a three chip design. It's the four-core Phenom chip with one defective core disabled. AMD gets to salvage a "non-prime" part, and the consumer should get a good deal on a CPU that's better than dual-core.
This is a nice side benefit of highly-parallel designs, as long as they're designed to degrade gracefully.

Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to Be ...
Former EE Times editor Brian Fuller recaps a spontaneous debate between semiconductor panelists regarding what field your children are studying.
It's a touchy subject among engineers. Most of us still love engineering. But, we may have seen career frustrations, especially in the aftershocks of the .com bubble bursting. In America, there's the sense that some small percentage of engineers do fantastically well if they join the right start-up, but most enjoy an above-average though not large lifestyle. It seems like the folks doing really well and making it look easy are the lawyers and MBAs.
Brian presents the two points of view in Greeley's Ghost: Panel dispatches. Peggy the EDA analyst has kids studing hard sciences -- good for her. Jack Harding, former Cadence CEO, has kids studying Liberal Arts. Fair enough (as long as it's a "respectable" Liberal Art ;-). But what I found interesting was his justification:
It's where you sit in the value chain that makes the difference." IBM, he argues, doesn't make money on its technology development. It makes money taking other people's technology and finding ways to make profit on it. It's hiring not engineers but liberal arts and business people. In housing, he added, the contractor takes the risk and gets the margin. The plumbers, framers and electricians he hires (you can't build the house without 'em!) get an hourly wage.
Grudgingly, I'd have to admit there's truth to this. But it's really more of a justification of the value of an executive over an individual contributor. And who says that executives can't be engineers?

Is EE Times Outsourcing Journalism?
But, lately I've become concerned about cutbacks.
- First they downsized the size of the papers (physically), and eliminated that funky old favorite "Immortal Works".
- Next, they made substantial staff cutbacks, including axing Richard Goering and their Editor in Chief.
Maybe this is the inevitable consequence, but lately I've noticed that many of their features are written by industry sources rather than full-time journalists. In moderation, this isn't a bad thing. Practicing engineers can give a valuable real-world perspective on problems we're seeing and how to solve them. But in excess, I'm worried that EE Times will become a collection of "advertorials". Indeed, some of the articles I read from "industry voices" proceed to describe some very specific, not widely recognized problem, and then lay out a solution: which, coincidentally, happens to be exactly the problem the author's company addresses! This can be self-serving and less than objective.
Let's hope that industry publications will strike a healthy balance between problems encountered by in-the-trenches engineers and objective analysis of the major issues and trends. There is significant value in traditional journalism. What else are you gonna do, get all your news and opinions from blogs??? :-)

Intel Uber Alles?
Intel and the Power of Having a Monopoly - Seeking Alpha is an analysis of Intel's long-term business prospects from an investment advisor's perspective. The author concludes that Intel has a very bright future.
Reading it, it makes it sound as though AMD might was well raise the white flag right now. Intel is the Borg.
I think this analysis is mostly right, but AMD has surprised us once in the past. It will be interesting to watch if they can come back to fight another day.

Great article on Statistical STA
Interesting that the authors are from Cadence. I didn't know they were big players in the STA arena. I know they have an "Encounter" timing system, but I'm not familiar with how advanced or accepted it is.
The article reinforces my view that statistical STA is "not ready for PrimeTime". That pun is not a slam against Synopsys! I mean that there needs to be a lot more support from the foundries and understanding by the design community before there's much adoption of SSTA for production chip timing.

Fare Ye Well, Richard Goering
I had to do a double-take when I read Gabe Moretti's column The Week after DAC: some lingering thoughts | EDA DesignLine. Buried therein was the comment about "where the industry is going, a clear indication came this week with the layoff of Richard Goering, the deacon of the EDA journalists core". At first I skimmed over this, thinking that he was talking about Gary Smith, whose departure from Dataquest has been previously lamented. But no, Richard Goering, the main EDA journalist at EE Times forever, has been laid off!
This is a sad development, both for what it may say about the EDA and Journalism industries (I love both), and personally for Mr. Goering, whose writing I have long admired. Let's hope he lands on his feet and happily applies his skills elsewhere.

Q: Whither EDA? A: Private Equity?
This morning's paper has a story about "private equity" firms being interested in investing in Cadence: Cadence would offer buyer steady cash flow. And, an investing blog has Cadence Design Negotiates With Buyout Firms.
This is all at the rumor stage, but it's interesting in what it says about EDA. Rather than being a high-growth industry where one might make several times investment by picking the right hot technology, this is more about lucrative cash flows coming from software maintenance agreements.
If private equity firms become players in our industry, how will this change them? Will it lead to "slash and burn" of R&D, just trying to milk the recurring revenue from existing products? But how could such an approach fund the R&D to keep pace with the changes and challenges following from Moore's Law?

I'm getting tired (so tired! --Bauhaus) of waiting on vendors who promise that all our problems with their product will be fixed in the next release!
I told an EDA vendor that waiting for their tool to improve reminded me of the play Waiting for Godot. I thought this quite clever, but they didn't seem to. Maybe they didn't have to read it in college?
It might be fun to cast EDA persons into the play. Who would play the roles?

Something Completely Different (but Worthy)
Dear readers,
Off topic, though perhaps a reason for the decline in my posting frequency since the beginning of the year. For the past several months, I've been supporting a program that raises awareness and funds for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This charity funds blood cancer research and patient services.
The program I'm part of is called Team in Training. Every season of every year, hundreds of runners, cyclists, and triathletes come together to train for a signature endurance event (e.g., marathon, century ride, or triathlon). More importantly, we collectively raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to help find a cure for cancer and to help those currently afflicted. We do this by getting sponsorship donations to the Society from our friends, families, and colleagues. Why not give blog readers a chance to help, too? That's where you come in. "How-to" SPICE Book
It's been several years since I've run SPICE myself, but I'm finding it increasingly needed even for a RTL/gate-level engineer. Could anyone recommend some really good SPICE books, which aren't just a reference but show you how to do things? You can post your recommendations and advice here as comments. The "things" I'd be most interested in doing would be characterizing digital standard cells and analyzing IC interconnect.
I looked at Amazon.com and didn't find a lot of books like this (no "SPICE for Dummies"?), but these two look interesting. Before I or my company spends a chunk of change, do you know these titles and how useful they are?

Hither ASIC
It's a thorough survey of what's happening in the business. I agree that designs need to see more IP reuse -- the extreme case is to use an ASSP. And I'm skeptical of Structured ASIC, and it seems the market has also given that idea the thumbs down. But the article didn't mention the trend of more fabless companies finding ways to do COT rather than ASIC design, possibly through "virtual ASIC vendors" like eSilicon or Open Silicon.

Whither ASIC
I'm surprised by how bad of shape the traditional ASIC business is in. Are any companies making money? Only IBM Microelectronics?
Several of the Japanese semiconductor powerhouses are cutting way back (or closing) their US ASIC engineering. Today a friend told me that LSI Logic isn't doing ASICs any more! Is that right?
The vendors that are doing the best have attractive IP portfolios, like IBM or TI. Those that historically relied on manufacturing process (e.g., Japanese) and left IP entirely up to the customer aren't faring well.
I'm especially surprised that even fabless chip startups aren't using ASIC vendors! They invest in the COT model or the "virtual ASIC" model, contracting with a number of service providers. I would have thought that the integration value-add of ASIC vendors would be even more attractive in these days of worrying about signal integrity, variability and DFM. Don't chip designers want "one throat to choke" when things going wrong?
We may not have ASIC vendors to kick around for long.

Immortal, Indeed
Those of you who read the print edition of EE Times may recall a funky little contest/feature that ran at the back of the paper, "Immortal Works". I think I can remember this *always* being part of the paper, even going back to the 1980s. Here's the latest version I could find.
Last month, EE Times went through a redesign. There are many changes to the organization and layout of the paper. It's actually printed on smaller (shorter and narrower) paper than before, in line with several major mainstream papers. More cost reductions from the ink and paper crowd, probably. I actually like the smaller format -- it's easier to carry around and peruse at opportune moments.
But I won't like if Immortal Works has been canned! It's missing from the redesigned print edition! According to the editors' explanation The new EE Times: more than a redesign:
Taking a hiatus will be Immortal Works, our longtime caption-writing contest of which many of you are devoted fans. We're moving the feature online, where the audience interaction is fast, efficient and easy.
Like I said, it was a sort of goofy feature. And even though I never had the time (or more likely, the wit) to submit an entry, I miss this quirky part of EE history! Immortal Works, where art thou?

Inspired by the DFT Bookcase over at the DFT Digest blog, I decided to create pointers to the technical books I use every day in my work. (Yes, I looked the ones strewn about my desk and next to the computer, rather than those arranged neatly (and less used) on my bookshelf. Perhaps you'll discover a title or two that will help you.

Ambric Multi-Core Design Wins Award
- the claim that this multi-core design was first architected for easy programming, before creating the hardware architecture. I agree with the claim that "most massively-parallel chip companies started with the hardware, leaving the programming model almost as an afterthought".
- the implementation is globally asynchronous, locally synchronous (GALS). Man, that is sexy! ;-) I've been interested of commercial implementations of this more-efficient clocking approach.
I'm going to watch for Ambric and try to learn more about their designs. By the way, interesting caveat in the quotes: "If Ambric's tools work as well as the company promises, ..." Ain't that always the challenge?

A Taste of DesignCon
I didn't go to DesignCon, but Gabe did, so let's sample his DesignCon Morsels.
What's nice is the variety of topics he touches on:
- The lack of interest in ESL vs. design implementation, and why engineers are being short-sighted by not getting into architecture.
- Thermal performance, an interdisciplinary problem. When I've been involved in thermal analysis, the biggest problem is coming up with a credible power consumption figure. It's back to the "vectors" problem, and what's a representative (or worst-case) simulation?
- Is DFM for Designers?
- Fewer students are going into Engineering. And engineers "get no respect", as Rodney Dangerfield would say.

Dr. Thomas W. Williams to Receive EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award
Look at all Dr. Williams' achievements, stretching back to the 1970s. This is (one of) the father of LSSD, which begat the full scan DFT methodology that we all use today. He's truly a giant in DFT one of the legendary early figures in EDA.

Chips Grab Mainstream Headlines
It's about successes announced by Intel and IBM to fabricate metal-gate transistors with "high-K" dielectric. This is good news, which hopefully will enable us to continue to follow Moore's Law.
But it doesn't hit me that this is the biggest development in 40 years. Is this triumph over materials significantly different from figuring out how to to use Copper interconnect, or "low-K" interconnect isolation? Is Texas Instruments Exiting the Semiconductor Technology Rat Race?
Technologists live for working on leading edge technology. TI killing off 32nm development is a major change in how it views itself and whether it will be able to attract the best and the brightest scientists in the future -- not to mention how the ones who do this there today must feel.
Now that is significant! Another IDM "throws in the towel" on doing all their own process and fab development. Will we be catching our breath at 45nm for awhile?

Intel Builds 80-Core Chip
- Better performance/power ratio
- Finer granularity of compute power and power consumption. If you need more performance, it wakes up more cores, and when you're done, they go back to sleep.
- "Core hopping". If one part of the chip gets hot, the work that those particular cores are doing is moved to other cores on another part of the chip.
- On-chip communications network. Of course, all multi-core chips have some sort of network. I'd like to see how sophisticated the Intel one is.

Hewlett-Packard's FPGA research, and replacing transistors
You may have seen the story earlier this week about a "breakthrough" announced by HP researchers, which involved applying nano technology to semiconductors.
I was intrigued, and Googled around to find this analysis at the "ars technica" web site: Hewlett-Packard's FPGA research, and replacing transistors. This excellent article explains that the HP announcement is for a very specific (and limited) application: FPGA interconnect. And it points out that the more promising HP announcement actually came out in 2005, which pointed to use of nanotechnology for circuit switching, not just interconnection.

In the news today is the much-talked-about list of 100 Best Companies to Work For 2007 in Fortune magazine.
Hmmm, the companies that we typically work at didn't fare too well. I only see a couple that would typically have ASIC or EDA engineers:

As far as high-tech, there are a lot more software companies listed, and many related to health care.

R.I.P. Dean Newton
I was fortunate to hear Dean Newton speak at a "Berkeley in Silicon Valley" lecture last April. My notes from that lecture note that "synthetic biology", the application of engineering to living organisms (on a nano scale), was one of Dr. Newton's current passions, and his family requested donations in his name to the Berkeley Center for Synthetic Biology.

Happy New Year in ASIC & EDA
- Gabe's column, Last minute deals open opportunities for 2007 and beyond, is focused and sounds plausible. His DFM story sounds good -- it needs to get more into the design phase, as a proactive guide to help people laying out the circuits. And I like his call for "Locality Sensitive Cells" that would be DFM-correct by construction. His other point, about Mentor's moves in the ESL and C-synthesis space, discusses alternatives to SystemC, and where C may be lacking as the perfect system-level language.
- Gary's "column" isn't really written by Gary. He has Richard Goering as his ghost writer! I have more problems with Gary's predictions that Gabe's. Gary is still predicting the ascendancy of ESL, FPGA, and embedded software. I still see plenty of challenge and opportunity in plain old RTL-based standard cell design! Gary does have 10 predictions, and it's worth looking over the rest of them for thought-provoking variety.

EDA is Child's Play
One of the more common parts of my job is to figure out why something stopped working, or why it is suddenly producing different (namely worse) results than before, when "nothing's changed". Things like
- Why is the synthesis tool crashing now when it ran fine before?
- What changed so that I'm not making area/timing any more?
- Why is equivalence checking failing now?
For all of these sorts of things, I end up comparing logs, netlists, scripts, etc. I am the tkdiff master! With my eagle eye and understanding of the personalities of EDA tools and companies, it's a sleuthing challenge to find the culprit.
If I tried to explain this to a layman, I'd have to say that part of my job is playing the grown-up version of one of my daughter's favorite games, Spot the Difference. Yes, that's what I went to all those years of college for. :-)

This page has the G80 Hardware Specs. How about 681 million transistors?
The architecture is very interesting and different from past GPUs designed by NVIDIA or ATI (AMD). Rather than dedicated compute engines for different stages of the "graphics pipeline", this new architecture has scores of 1.35 GHz streaming processors that can be assigned to the most demanding graphics tasks for a particular game or scene. Because of this generality, it can be applied to completely new problems, as described in ExtremeTech's article:
As you might imagine, this will be aimed at highly parallelizable compute tasks, such as scientific computing, financial analysis and oil exploration. The Longest Quick Reference Ever
So, I trudged over to the online documentation and was happy to find the Tool X Quick Reference manual. I figured it'd be a couple of pages long and I'd print it out and keep it next to my computer.
Well I was shocked (shocked, I tell you!) to find that the "Quick" Reference manual is 86 pages long. Something is seriously wrong with your product or your tech pubs when this happens.
What do you think? Are you surprised that a tool could be so inscrutable? Is it just that the writers don't understand what Quick Reference means? And, can you guess which tool I'm referring to? (I'll post the answer later.)

Just how unsexy is EDA?
April Fools in October? I thought I must be reading a joke: in Life without Dataquest, Gabe Moretti reports that research firm Gartner Dataquest has dropped coverage of the EDA industry, and laid off reknowned analyst Gary Smith and his colleagues.
This is disturbing. I don't like changes like this! Dataquest (and Gary) have been covering the EDA industry for many years, providing analysis and prognostications, that, agree with them or not, were a starting point for debating the direction of EDA technology.
Let's hope that Gary and crew resurface to share their wisdom and opinions again. Best wishes to them.

Over 500 Million Served
At my previous company, the lifetime projected volume of the ASIC we were designing was around 50,000 units. Yet, the ASIC vendor had to provide significant complex IP and especially engineering headcount to shepherd the chip to the prototype stage. Unfortunately, the market changed and that chip never made it to production. Sorry, ASIC vendor!
No wonder that most ASIC vendors are having a very tough life, with rising costs and declining design starts (and especially, fewer designs going to mass production). Contrast this with foundries such as TSMC, which get the customer to do all the IP integration, implementation, and verification, and the foundry can just focus on selling wafers. No wonder this model is eclipsing the ASIC model.

Wondering about the IEEE
I feel like I should be a member of the IEEE. I am, this year. Throughout my career, it's been an on-again, off-again relationship. Even when my company reimburses me, sometimes I feel that it's not worth it.
What I want it to be
- Teach me about new developments in my specialty. There are some gems, but it's harder to find from IEEE publications vs. trade publications like EE Times or EDN. Part of it is because I can't find a Society/Publication that aligns well with my specialty (see Gripes, below).
- Teach me about interesting developments in other specialties. The articles need to start from a basic level, not trying to prove how sophisticated and complex the author can be. I am not finding this from the IEEE. Something like Scientific American or Discovery magazines might be a more accessible resource.
- Represent my professional interests. The IEEE-USA tries to do this, and I'm a member. But membership is optional, and I wonder how many USA EEs belong or are even familiar with it?
What IEEE should do
- Give a primer to members on how the IEEE works.
I have sort of figured these things, but why doesn't the
IEEE come with a "user's manual" to address these dead-on?
- What is a Region and what's a Chapter?
- What is the difference between their publications Spectrum, Proceedings, and Transactions?
Other gripes
- There's no Society for Digital IC (RTL & Gates) engineers! I just can't figure this one out. There are certainly Societies for semiconductor process, circuit design, and packaging. But what Society should a plain-ol' ASIC engineer belong to? Why isn't there a perfect fit for such a common EE discipline?
- The price/performance of an IEEE membership really seems out of whack. Why does it cost me (or my company) over $140/year, when the main benefit is a magazine subscription or two? Why, I can subscribe to EE Times for free and get far more practical news and technical information! Where is all the IEEE money going? To some huge bureaucracy in New Jersey?

EDA standards development within the IEEE is mismanaged
Come on, Gabe, tell us what you really think about the IEEE DASC: EDA DesignLine | EDA standards development within the IEEE is mismanaged
It's quite an indictment about what ought to be one of the most prestigious standards bodies related to EDA.
I know that most EDA vendors have groups whose full-time responsibility is the care and feeding of standards groups. In an ideal world, they'd be ensuring the most elegant and implementable open standards. The Internet standards bodies seem to be a fine example of this, and have delivered interoperable standards that spurred an incredible information revolution over the past decade. Why can't the EDA industry have that, too?
In reality, the EDA vendors do quite a bit of political maneuvering and intrigue. For example, we might only have to deal with one HDL if Cadence had opened up Verilog before VHDL emerged. Imagine the tremendous resources spent on VHDL that could have been saved. We almost had two library standards because Synopsys wouldn't open up the "Liberty" format until there was a revolution brewing to move the industry to DCL/ALF formats. You've never heard of DCL and ALF? Well, Synopsys finally opened up .lib and no one needed those alternate formats.
Anyways, getting back to Gabe's post, it's sad how quickly the proposed low-power standards are degenerating into political battles between EDA companies, much like the CCS vs. ECSM library standoff. Cadence's initial proposal sounded pretty reasonable, though perhaps I'm naive to think that they and Synopsys could have agreed on a common standard.

YAST - Yet Another STA Tool
I'm initially puzzled when an EDA vendor fields a new tool to take on Synopsys PrimeTime, e.g., Incentia Timing Analysis and Constraint Management Software Adopted by Ambarella.
PrimeTime is one of Synopsys highest-quality, most trouble-free tools. The main gripe I have with PT is that it can only tell you about timing problems -- it doesn't fix them! Hence, a cottage industry of home-grown scripts and supplementary tools exists to take PT reports and generate ECOs to fix the violations.
However, some of the features in this TimeCraft tool sound pretty attractive, and give me second thoughts about assuming nothing can beat PrimeTime. Attractive features include
- MSV support
- "multi-task capability for multi-corner and multi-mode analysis"
- Advanced OCV features
- Constraint Manager

Charter for a Corporate CAD Group
I discovered another EDA-related blog, Cool Verification. Cool Verification: Creating Corporate Standards? Beware... is an excellent post outlining the considerations in creating and managing a "Corporate CAD" department.
I've taken this group's mission for granted, but my company didn't even have such a department four years ago, even as it was cranking out huge industry-leading chips. What finally pushed us to create a central group was the proliferation of derivative chips and especially the diverse chips being designed by new business units. It no longer made sense to have a few "designers with a tool fetish" responsible for creating and maintaining all the flows. Hence, a CAD department was born. The referenced post touches upon the dynamics of trying to please all groups in the face of different requirements and priorities.

- The Problem
- My company was working with Synopsys on "Chip Architect" and "Floorplan Manager" to close timing on "deep submicron" designs. These were around 0.35 micron, IIRC. I never used Chip Architect, but my colleagues were beta testing and helping to debug it. I spent a lot of time with Floorplan Manager; it was pretty inefficient to back-annotate tons of layout data onto Design Compiler, and for DC to optimize designs in a way both effective and feasible for physical design. We were struggling to close timing on the design.
- The pitch
- An SPC Sales guy kept calling me, asking us to evaluate FE. He made extraordinary claims about its performance, capacity, and quality of results. He wanted us to try it on a multimedia design one of our groups was working on.
- What I did
- I couldn't believe that this little startup could deliver such amazing results that Synopsys and Cadence couldn't! Clearly, he was just making wild claims to get our attention. So, I never did bring him in for an evaluation.
- What happened
- Our design project took so long and it was eventually cancelled. And I ended up leaving the company around the same time. Later, SPC was acquired by Cadence for a large sum and today is the foundation and namesake of "Encounter", their whole family of Digital IC implementation products!
- Lesson learned
- Don't dismiss startups lightly! Consider them skeptically, but give them a chance if their story seems plausible.

2006 DAC Report
Introduction
The "hot" areas of EDA these days are Electronic System Level (ESL) and Design For Manufacturing (DFM). Indeed, there were numerous companies offering things such as SystemC design or yield-aware layout tools.
I attended DAC for one day, Wednesday. I focused on low-power and variation-aware tools, and compiled a list of companies participating in these areas. I had time to see about half the companies I identified. Below is a short summary of my impression of those companies.
Companies that Impressed

Azuro. Low-power clock design. They optimize clock gating and physical clock tree for low power. They claim 15-25% less power than using today's tools. This is a niche tool that is worth looking at. The most impressive thing I saw at DAC was their clock tree analysis/visualization tool. At a glance, the design can visualize the structure and quality of the clock tree. It's better than any analysis I've seen before.

Altos. Library characterization, including statistical effects. Their characterization system, Liberate, includes their own very fast SPICE-like engine. They claim ~10X faster than today's tools. They can generate .lib and also the latest CCS and ECSM models. They appear to have a solid grasp of what's needed for statistical characterization, and their high performance will be very welcome for that. They're working to support SSTA from Extreme DA. The founders are from CadMOS (SI tool acquired by Cadence) and seem sharp. They recently published an article in EE Times. [Note: Magma just announced an upgrade to their characterization system.]

Proficient. Low-power design. Intriguing. It seems like a pretty small company.

Prolific. Post-layout power & timing improvement. Their tool may be useful and the approach is sensible and simple (bolting onto PrimeTime). Designers could do something like this themselves, but if their tool is reasonably priced and effective, it may be worth it.

TSMC. They conducted a series of advanced methodology presentations. It is impressive how much they've thought through the whole methodology and worked with EDA vendors on their "Reference Flow 7.0".
Companies that Didn't Impress
Censored! I'm don't yet have John Cooley's nerve to dis companies in public. In my case, it wouldn't really be fair to opine on them after a half-hour presentation or demo, anyway.
Other Notes
- "Power Forward Initiative" lunch hosted by Cadence. This is a consortium initiated by Cadence to develop a standard "CPF" Common Power Format description of low-power design intent. CPF would drive implementation, checking and analysis tools. Something like SDC is for timing. This may bear fruit in a couple of years, but of concern is that Synopsys is not on board. Will it be another political fight like CCS vs. ECSM? [Yes, the politics have already started with a Synopsys counter-proposal.]
- Coincident with DAC, Synopsys announced enhancements to PrimeTime and Star-RCXT with statistical capabilities.
Best Freebie
There didn't appear to be major schwag as I remember from years ago. I remember when you could always count on Viewlogic for a bat or a hockey stick, or Altera for a soccer ball. However, one gift at this year's DAC impressed me. It was the hand-held fan from Bluespec. It appears to be your standard simple battery-powered fan. However, there are LEDs embedded in the fan blades, and when you turn it on and the fan spins, the lights spell out promotional messages for Bluespec. Pretty "cool"!

EDA Players Detail Involvement in TSMC Reference Flow
With respect to statistical STA, an area of interest to me, the article sites support from Cadence and Magma, but not Synopsys. That's funny, I don't think of Cadence as a player in the timing space. They don't even really have an STA tool, do they? I thought all their customers sign off on PrimeTime.

TSMC Flow Adds Statistical STA
Interesting that the Statistical STA flow supports vendors Magma and Synopsys. Magma has been promoting their Quartz STA tool. Has Synopsys announced a Statistical STA tool? I don't recall seeing it.
And, what about library support? How will this be done? I haven't seen any standards offered for representing variation in Liberty format, for example.
Overall, this announcement is a hopeful sign, but I wonder how real it is, or when we might actually see a working flow.

Metcalfe's Law is Wrong
I don't know what analysis Metcalfe's original "law" was based upon, but it doesn't seem as robust as Moore's law. The paper referenced here goes on to hypothesize what the law regarding the value of networks should have been. It dovetails nicely with another concept, the "long tail", that comes up when discussing e-commerce, blogs, and many other phenomena.

Cadence Powers Forward
I wasn't sure to make of Cadence's announced Power Forward Initiative. This is such a nascent field, do we know what to standardize?
But then I could think of some design practices that would be very good to have a standard way to describe and verify, such as what voltage and power domains various parts of the design should be connected to, what is the design convention for isolation and level shifting, etc.
This could be a useful standard. Let's hope it doesn't degrade into another Cadence vs. Synopsys "we have two standards so we have no standard" like ECSM and CCS libraries!

Semi Business is too good? Allocation, here we come!
The headline EETimes.com - TSMC puts customers on allocation certainly caught my eye and made me think of the good ol' days.
But reading the fine print, this is only for older geometries, i.e., 0.18 and 0.25 micron. Even though there ought to be lots of "second-tier" fabs with capacity, especially in China, the article explains that it's difficult to port mixed-signal design from one process to another. Once you go to production with a particular foundry on these types of "touchy" designs, you are in bed with that foundry for a long time!

Good news! Fabless semiconductor vendors (e.g., NVDA, BRCM, etc.) won't be up a creek in getting yields at 65nm and below: EETimes.com - TSMC DFM format empowers fabless design
If this works as advertised, this collaboration will enable TSMC + EDA vendors to work like an Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM), and not suffer from walls and insufficient information sharing.
I'm looking forward to the TSMC Technology Symposium, which is always good for seeing how the foundry world operates, and what interesting issues they address that we seldom hear about in the "front-end" design world.

Startups to watch
This is an intriguing list of startups, though the selection criteria is rather mysterious. Reviewing it gives you a feel for what's coming and what's hot in our industry. I spotted a few EDA companies, several in the "DFM" space and at least one related to "ESL" design.

UNDERclocking, anyone?
Those darn ATI chips are "hot", alright: Apple purposely slows MacBook graphics chip.
GPUs are just so huge. It's an "embarassingly parallel" application, so ATI & NVIDIA can just keep throwing more gates that the problem, following Moore's Law. The Holy Grail is to render cinematic quality in real time. We'll get there some day, but there will need to be lots of technology and methodology innovations to use power wisely.

Building up a `bump' in the new flat world
I attended an alumni event, Berkeley in Silicon Valley, earlier this week. It was at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, which is definitely worth a visit for the audience of this blog. Ah, the memories! They have all the early PCs, and really old mechanical or analog computers, slide rules, etc.
The featured speaker was Professor Richard Newton, Dean of the UC Berkeley College of Engineering (my alma mater). I was going to post a write-up of his talk, but Mike Langberg from the San Jose Mercury News already did a very professional job at MercuryNews.com | 04/13/2006 | Langberg: Building up a `bump' in the new flat world. So go read that!
Some comments/notes:
- Synthetic Biology is "the next big thing". Remember "Plastics" from the movie The Graduate? Well, this is like that for the next century.
- The questions from the audience were surprisingly pragmatic:
- How can we invest in Synthetic Biology? Prof. Newton didn't have specific opportunities. It's an extremely new and risky field, more "research" than "development" at this point. I wonder if Biotech mutual funds would cover this space? It seems like they would.
- What about the problem of H1B visas and how that will devalue US engineering careers? I don't think a university professor can really appreciate the anxiety that some engineers in industry feel. Professors see the newest, sexiest technologies and get to work with really interesting emerging companies. Personally, I've become less concerned with H1B than with "offshoring". At least the visa-holders bring their high skill levels and tax-paying ability into the US!
- With demographic changes in California, the questioner suggested that the future majority ethnic groups (i.e., Latinos)do not value education as highly, and does this pose a challenge to Prof. Newton's call to make the Bay Area a "bump in the flat world"? Wow, this seemed like a politically incorrect question, and the questioner must have had guts (or been oblivious) to ask it. Prof. Newton didn't cut him any slack, saying that he found the Latinos that he encounters in his work to be just as passionate about education as anyone else.

IT Jobs Migration: Fears vs. Reality :: AO is a thoughtful, even-handed review of the job dynamics of the Information Technology field. It refers to an in-depth report by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), "Globalization and Offshoring of Software".
I'd assume that the analysis of the IT field applies to the closely related engineering fields like hardware and software engineering. Let's hope that the conclusion is correct, that an open market benefits both developed and developing nations. I'm sure this is true on the macro level, but we must keep an eye on those directly affected by outsourcing -- do companies invest in "new business opportunities to generate more new job"?

SystemVerilog, a better RTL
I haven't done a thorough survey of the language, but a few of the things that will help Design/Synthesis are:
- Interfaces (objects that define ports (and even protocols) between designs)
- Explicit treatment of intent for case statements
- Explicit treatment of intent for always blocks
Is Synopsys undermining synthesis standardization? Gee, they'd never do that. ;-) Looked at from the perspective of protecting their franchise, they have the most to lose from making designs portable. We've the same types of battles over library standardization (finally, Liberty) and a synthesis subset for Verilog HDL.

Sure, I can believe it's a very fast, efficient CPU, with provisions for multi-processing. But IBM is betting its whole computing future on it? And how could this be so revolutionarily different from anything that all the other genius CPU designers have come up with, including AMD and deep-pocketed Intel?
I don't get it, but I'd like to. What's so different?

Engineers' pay will fall
He has a very concise analysis of the reasons that Law and Medicine seem to provide more lucrative, secure careers now that "The World is Flat".
He doesn't dump on engineering and say to never pursue it as a career, but you need to go into it with your eyes open and priorities straight.
